Title: Use of Analogies

Use of analogies has been a good idea to make students understand about a concept while I was trying to explain the working of the basic communication system, the process of Modulation and the need for carrier. It was explained by taking an Analogy of the A process of commuting from the college to home and back to students. The students were asked about the various ways by which they come to the college, some used college transport facility, some came through their own vehicles. As the bus/Car/Scooty was used to travel, no fatigue was experienced by the students to commute. In comparison to this if they were to travel on foot, they would feel tired. Same is the case with the information carrying signals. The modulating signal which bears information is superimposed on the carrier (high frequency signal). Because of the process of superimposition the signal is able to travel a longer distance without being attenuated. Hence, need for repeaters/amplifiers is reduced. Signal conveys meaningful information at the receiver using minimum resources.

Title: Real Time Examples

Innovative teaching methods help the students to understand the course better. Real Time examples and using Analogies help the student to visualise and feel the subject. In a Microprocessor based course, the students are made to think while telling them stories for e.g a Microprocessor 8086 is designed to interface with many devices and these devices share the burden of microprocessor to make it more effective and speeding its processor so it is analogous to a boss in a firm or industry managing to distribute the task of a firm among its different employees depending upon the type of work in which the employee is expertise. Hence increasing the efficiency and giving better results.

Title: Real Time examples and applications

The main objective of any teacher is that the student should be:
1. Always interested in the topic taught
2. Able to understand the concept of topic taught

If the objective is obtained, then only the student will be able to give better output.
To fulfill the objective needs, the teacher should have some innovative teaching methodology like:
Day to day or real time examples and applications of the topic taught.

While teaching microcontroller and application, I gave an example of washing machine which we all use.
Washing machine runs in mainly four steps:
1. water level check
2. wash
3. rinse
4 spin (drying)
When we put clothes in the washing machine and switch on it, it weighs the clothes and check the water level.
If there is no water supply, it will not go to the second step that is washing. so this processing ( work done of checking water level) and control (going from 1st step ( water level check)to 2nd step (washing) are done by microcontroller.
Then if there is proper water level in the machine, it goes to next step that is washing.
Again in washing , if the clothes are very dirty, it takes more time. So the dirt content is checked and when the clothes are washed, then it goes to next step that is rinse. So this processing and controlling during washing is done by microcontroller.
So the microcontroller does both processing and controlling.

Title: Use of Analogy Related to day to day life

Using analogy in the classroom is an effective way which helps the students to understand the topic better. As we make use of analogies that are related to real life.We can increase retention of information and thus improve and strengthen the learning process .While teaching information theory ,I was trying to explain the relation between information content and probability by taking an example from day to day life. Taking three sentences that are written below,

1 Sun rises in the east.
2. Dog bites a man
3 .Man bites a dog

Then students were asked to tell the information content of each sentence and what will be their probabilities. In sentence 1,sun always rises in the east , so the information content is zero but probability is very high almost 1. In 2 dog bites a man, information content is very less but probability is high Say 0.8 in 3 man bites a dog ,here information content is very high ,almost 1 but probability is very less say 0.02.Thus we can say that probability and information is inversely proportional that is high probability means less information or vice-versa.

Title: Gates _Switches

The main purpose of teaching is to convey the concepts effectively to the students . This creates a lasting impression that contributes to their lifelong learning. Real world examples and analogies work effectively for better understanding of a new concept
I take up the switching circuit analogy to introduce to the concept of logic gates to the students while teaching digital electronics. In order to explain the concept of AND gate i take up the example of switching circuit having a bulb connected to supply via two switches connected in series. Here, the glowing of bulb is taken as high output and switches can be compared to input variables. The bulb will glow only when both the switches are ON and the current flows in the circuit. Likewise the AND gate will give High output when both its inputs are high. Similarly, for explaining OR gate, I i take up the example of switching circuit having a bulb connected to supply via two switches connected in parallel. The bulb will glow when either of the switches are ON or both the switches are turned ON simultaneously and the current flows in the circuit. It follows that OR gate will give High output when either of the inputs are high or both its inputs are high simultaneously
This analogy of switching circuits helps the students to realize the concept of gates in an effective manner and retain it for long time.
